Lighthouse Baptist Church began in the summer of 1997, when a group of people began meeting in the living room of the pastor’s house on Sunday mornings. They were looking for an independent, fundamental, KJV Bible-believing Baptist Church in Lafayette, Indiana. After a few months of steady growth and meeting three times a week, the pastor knew God was leading him to get a building and give birth to a new church.
Our first building was the old Sarge Biltz’s Building. It was a run-down bar and grill located on the corner of HWY 52 and St. Rd 25 which was prime real estate. Our camp preacher, Tom Derryberry, came up from out of state and pointed out the building to our pastor and told him that is the building we need to get for our church. So, Pastor got a group of men together and they went and checked out the building and property and began praying about it. The owner of the building saw the men, that they were young, hard-working men and willing to work, and knew they could do something with his rundown building. So, he agreed to rent it to Pastor for one year, for $10.
Immediately, remodeling and renovations began and in just a few weeks, our building was ready for our first service in the old bar. Some local people from town would stop by on Sunday mornings thinking the restaurant was open again and were surprised to see a church auditorium instead of a dining area, Sunday school classes instead of a barroom, light, and joy instead of darkness and hangovers. It was a lighthouse instead of a bar, so we aptly named our church Lighthouse Baptist Church.
Although it was a great location for a church and by transforming a bar into a church, it is a great picture of the transforming that Christ does with our lives when we come to His light, it was not the permanent location God had for us. After a year we had greatly outgrown the building and needed something more. Another church on the south side of Lafayette contacted Pastor Murdock and suggested a merge of both churches. Due to longstanding issues, Pastor declined the offer. The Pastor, believing it was God’s will, closed the church and gifted the property to Lighthouse Baptist Church. The only thing that was left was a beautiful building and property.
The church was in need of renovating and updating prior to us occupying it, so once again, our people went into renovation mode. Over the years we have made several changes to the inside and outside of the building, have added new buildings, and made changes to the property. But the greatest change is the transformation that's taken place in people’s lives over the years. 2022 is our 25th year, and Lighthouse Baptist Church has stood firm in its doctrinal beliefs as an independent, fundamental, KJV Bible-believing, separated church and has been a lighthouse to the Lafayette area preaching Christ, sending hope, and calling people to the joy of having a personal relationship with Christ. Lives have been transformed, broken families have been restored, and children have found a great happy place of hope and help while growing up. We invite you to join us at Lighthouse Baptist Church as we continue to send out the Gospel of Christ, giving hope and joy to a needy world.
To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
